What Is Quadify?
Quadify is a software enhancement that sits on top of Volumio, letting you repurpose your original FM4 tuner (or similar hardware) to control music playback with buttons and a rotary knob. Instead of just relying on Volumio’s web interface, you can browse, play, and pause music directly from your tuner’s front panel, with custom OLED screens displaying clock, now-playing info, menus, and more.
Key Features
- Volumio Integration: Uses Volumio’s APIs (socketIO, CLI) to read track info, handle playback commands, and display status.
- Physical Buttons: Each button triggers a specific action (Play, Pause, Next, Shuffle, etc.), often lighting a corresponding LED.
- Rotary Knob: Rotating can scroll through menus or adjust volume; pressing selects items or toggles playback, depending on your config.
- Multiple Screen Layouts: Choose between “Minimal,” “Modern,” “Original,” “WebRadio,” or a simple Clock display.
- Spectrum Visuals: Optional animated spectrum (CAVA) on the Modern or WebRadio screens.
- Easy Escape: A long-press on the rotary usually returns you to the Clock screen if you get lost.
Before You Begin
Configure Volumio:
- If you plan to use Tidal or Qobuz, go into Volumio’s web UI (e.g., http://volumio.local/) → Settings → Sources and log into your account(s).
- For local/USB or network libraries, add them under Sources and let Volumio index your music.
- Confirm you can play these sources from Volumio’s web interface. Quadify can only show and control them if they’re already set up in Volumio.
Install & Run Quadify:
- Quadify replaces your tuner’s display with custom OLED screens and ties the button/rotary inputs to Volumio commands.
- Launch Quadify, and it will connect to Volumio, read the current playback state, and provide its own front-end UI.
Quadify Screens & Navigation
Clock Screen (Home)
- Shows a simple time/date display (configurable).
- Acts as your “home” screen—if unsure where you are, a long-press of the rotary will bring you back here.
Minimal Screen
- A stripped-down now-playing look for minimal clutter.
- Often chosen by users who want a clean aesthetic.
Modern Screen
- A detailed now-playing display with progress bar, volume indicator, track info, etc.
- Can optionally show a CAVA-based audio spectrum. You can enable/disable this in the display/config menu.
Original Screen
- This is a copy of the original FM4 screen with a few enhancements for all of you purists out there, more basic now-playing UI (predecessor to the Modern layout).
- Shows key track info without the optional spectrum or advanced graphics.
WebRadio Screen
- Special layout for radio streams.
- May also show a spectrum if you enable it, giving you visual feedback while listening to internet radio.
Menu & Managers (Tidal, Qobuz, Library)
- If Tidal/Qobuz accounts are set in Volumio, you can browse them via Quadify’s Tidal/Qobuz managers.
- Similarly, a library or USB manager helps you navigate your local/USB music once Volumio is set to scan those sources.
Buttons & Rotary Knob
Buttons
- Arranged in 4 rows × 2 columns, each possibly controlling:
- Play
- Pause
- Previous
- Next
- Shuffle
- Repeat
- Spare or user-defined
- Reload/Restart Quadify
- Pressing a button often lights an LED for 0.5 seconds or toggles an LED if it’s a status action (e.g., staying lit for “Play”).
Rotary Knob
- Rotate: Scroll through menus or adjust volume, depending on context.
- Short Press: Usually “Select” in a menu or toggles play/pause.
- Long Press: Your escape route—returns you to the Clock screen.
Spectrum On/Off
- In the Display Menu (or Config Menu), look for an option to toggle the Spectrum (CAVA).
- Enabled: The Modern or WebRadio screen will show an animated bar or wave visual.
- Disabled: A simpler display, possibly faster and less distracting.
Summary
- Quadify transforms your vintage tuner into a Volumio-powered smart audio system, complete with physical controls for Tidal, Qobuz, webradio, local music, and more.
- Clock screen is your safe home base.
- Multiple now-playing layouts (Minimal, Modern, Original, WebRadio) are available, plus managers for library/Tidal/Qobuz if they’re configured in Volumio.
- Buttons handle immediate actions (Play, Pause, Next, etc.) and can blink an LED.
- The rotary can navigate menus, adjust volume, or confirm selections, with a long-press returning you home.
All in all, Quadify provides a classic hardware feel on top of modern Volumio streaming capabilities, letting you enjoy your music from a vintage-style front panel without losing any of Volumio’s powerful features.
